Research area
I am a researcher in synoptic and dynamical meteorology, adopting a weather system perspective to study the climate system and its evolution.
I am broadly interested in the dynamics of Rossby waves, the large-scale atmospheric oscillations that modulate the weather over middle latitudes. They play also an important role for the occurrence and evolution of extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, cold spells, windstorms, tropical cyclones, severe thunderstorms.
In my project here at ETH, I plan to study how weather systems (on the short scale) and climate variability (on the long scale) affect the genesis of cold air during boreal winter. This process is strictly tied to the global warming we are experiencing, as our planet cannot "cool off" as efficiently as it used to do due to the greenhouse effect.
