Dr. Yann Quilcaille's research focuses on climate extremes and climate emulators. He investigates the evolution of climate hazards such as heatwaves, fires and droughts by combining observations and climate model experiments. He is an active developer of climate emulators, which are models based on physics & statistics that replicate climate models at a much lower computational cost. He aims at applying their strengths to endogenize climate modeling within other models, such as socio-economic models.
Dr. Yann Quilcaille studied at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Paris-Saclay (Theoretical Physics, 2010-2014). He completed a first MSc at AgroParisTech (2012-2013, Economics of Sustainable Development, of Environment and of Energy), a second MSc at Université Pierre & Marie Curie (2013-2014, Ocean, Atmosphere, Climate and Space Observations) and his PhD at Université Paris-Saclay (2018). He joined IIASA (Austria) as a research scholar (2018-2021), where he advanced the simple climate model OSCAR. He joined ETH Zürich (2021-...), where he developed the spatially-resolved emulator for climate extremes MESMER-X, advanced research on fire weather, and extreme event attribution.
